Your Questions,
Answered
How did this happen?
MTC was the previous owner of the Marana prison, running it as a private prison from the mid-1990s until 2013, when they sold the prison to the state of Arizona for $150,000. They continued running the minimum-security prison until 2023 when it was closed down.
In late 2024, the State of Arizona placed the facility up for sale. Management and Training Corporation (MTC) had the highest bid and bought the facility for $15 million, with the intent of opening an ICE detention center.
What is PRICE doing about this?
Pima Resists ICE has been organizing and strategizing since October 2025 to stop the detention center from opening. Our actions so far:
Rallying community members to attend and speak at town council meetings
Protests before town council meetings
Meetings with the Mayor, Town manager, and several Town Councilmembers
Gathering over 2,000 signatures on a petition against the ICE detention center
Press conference with Adelita Grijalva
Consultations with legal experts
Community forum with Supervisor Jennifer Allen
Ongoing outreach to Marana and the surrounding communities to share information, calls to action, and how to get involved
Proposing a resolution to the Town of Marana. While Marana has not yet passed this resolution, the Pima County Board of Supervisors, the City of Tucson, and the City of South Tucson all did.
Submitting numerous Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests
Working with various immigrant support and anti-ICE groups in Southern Arizona to stop the detention center from opening
